Hey Probabes! You may be sat wondering whether you are ready to teach.

Many beauty service providers view themselves as experts but what does that actually mean. Beyond this they often question when the right time to teach is. We have come up with 9 self-reflection questions and tasks to help you establish if you are an expert ready to teach!

1. The easiest question to answer... Are you aged 19+ with a years experience?

In order to teach within the beauty industry you must be aged 19 and over. You will also need at least one years experience to teach your chosen beauty treatment.

We do not recommend rushing into teaching just because you meet the minimum requirements above. The next 9 questions will aid you in making an educated decision.

2. Have you provided the treatment over 100 times?

The more you do the better you get right? So how many times have you performed the treatment? Not just to a meh standard but to a WOW I DID THAT standard? Look back over your last 10 treatments assess them, what went well and where could you improve.

You should be able to confidently say yes to this question before you even look at other 9. It is one thing to be able to do a treatment. It is another to do it well consistently. You need to have experienced a range of clients with varying needs in order to be equipped to help others teach.

3. Can you answer 50 questions about your treatment?

We are going to use AI for this one. I want you to go ChatGPT and ask if to give you 50 questions about your area without the answers. Set aside some time and answer as many as you can. Where do you get stuck? Which were you unsure about?

Action the areas you are unsure of! We don't expect educators to know everything but you should know the majority. Anything your unsure of set time aside and research, learn and grow in that area. You shouldn't be in a state of panic should a student ask you an unexpected question. We most certainly should not be winging it.

4. If a client made a complaint about the treatment e.g., it did not last or the outcome wasn't as expected, would you know what to do?

Your students are going to ask you for support at each hurdle and this includes dealing with complaints and concerns. Picture this 'your client messages you to let you know the service you performed didn't last as long as they hoped and now they want a full refund. Your policy states you do not offer these' How would you address this?

This is a common complaint experience by many beginner beauty providers and one your students are very likely to face. If you are unable to address this confidently then how will you help your students navigate this.

5. Have you accomplished the main industry goals?

By this we mean have you been able to achieve fully booked status. This will vary person to person depending on your chosen hours but can you say you are fully booked at least 70% of the time? Have you met your financial goals within your business? Are you experiencing ongoing growth? Are you charging your worth? Sit down and answer these questions. If the answer to any is no the set up an action plan with clear KPI's and monitor your progress.

The beauty industry in the UK falls victim to chonic undercharging especially by beginners. It is important that you have hit your own goals in order to empower students to achieve theirs. Becoming fully booked and earning a living wage is not as common in the industry as is advertised. It is vital that you have experienced this to be able to assist your students. Courses can no longer solely teach the skill and must provide insight into how to thrive as a business owner. Using your own experiences can be very beneficial to your students.

6. Are you committed to continued professional development?

How many courses have you completed since qualifying? How many masterclasses have you attended? How often do you engage in continued professional development? I want you to book onto a CPD course this can be in person or online in the next 3 months.

The beauty industry is constantly changing it is imperative for you to stay up to date. Your students wil be relying on you for important updates even after they have qualified. This is also key to ensuring your courses are of a high quality. If you cannot honestly commit to CPD every quarter then maybe teaching is not for you.

7. Do you see yourself as an expert?

How you view yourself is key to your success? Do you currently see yourself as an expert? Are you positioning yourself as an expert? If you do not believe you are an expert.. What are you going to do to ensure that you achieve it. I want you to look in the mirror and tell yourself 3 things that you are an expert on. How does that feel? What do you need to replicate this feeling.

Self-awareness as an educator is fundamental to your success. You must ensure that you see yourself as an expert. This includes positioning yourself as such on your socials. You have to believe in yourself! You are a model to your students they need to believe in themselves the way you believe in you.

8. Do others see you as an expert?

Are you at the point in your career where others in your industry would view you as an expert? Are people reaching out to you for help and support? Do you post educational content and showcase your expertise? I want you to either join a beginners group chat for your industry on Facebook and answer at least once question per day for 5 days or answer any story questions, polls from fellow industry besties to offer your expertise. I also want you to get on your stories and record an educational video on a topic of your choice.

Prospective students want to know that you know your stuff. Positing educational content benefits everyone that follows you prospective students, clients and fellow experts. Your prospective students need to trust you and your knowledge before they will part with their hard earned money and book onto your courses. So ensuring your expert status is known is important.

9. Do you want to teach?

Seems silly right? Wrong... so many experts transition into the role of an educator because they think it is what they SHOULD be doing? So do you want to teach? Or is someone telling you you should? I want you to list 10 reasons why you want to be an educator.

It is important that you are doing what is best for YOUR business and YOU. Being an educator is not easy and is not the only way to scale your business. Opening a training academy has the power to completely transform your business moving from service provider to full time educator is very much a possibility. So before you make the jump make sure it's the right one.
