5 Steps to Becoming an Outstanding Beauty Educator

Hey Probabes! Lets talk about becoming a beauty educator
So you want to know what the RIGHT way to becoming an educator within the beauty industry is. We have broken this process down into 5 easy steps!
Step One: Get your teaching qualification.
There are many qualifications out there but the one you need is the Level 3 Award in Education and Training. This is an introductory teaching qualification that will allow you teach any skill which you have at least one years experience in.
There are two types of AET course: Accredited and Ofqual Regulated. The main difference is that an Ofqual qualification allows you to teach in Higher Education settings and also permits you to teach Ofqual regulated qualifications such as the VCTC. If you are planning to open your own private academy then an accredited course is perfect for you. The Ofqual qualification is generic meaning it can be used outside of the industry. In comparison privately accredited courses like ours are specific to the beauty industry and in our case better tailored to the needs of beauty experts. We do understand the value of regulated courses which is why we offer the Ofqual course as an optional upgrade if you later decide you would like to take your business in a new direction.
Step Two: Find your accreditor
Accreditation is a process of reviewing course materials and educator credentials to ensure courses align with industry standards and will qualify for insurance. There are many accreditation boards in the UK, we are one of them, each will have their own requirements and expectations. This includes the types of documentation they require, the courses they are happy to accredit and the qualifications you need to be accredited by them. Likewise different accreditors will have different standards of service, have varying rates and varying customer reviews. For example, we include access to a CPD Hub complimentary with all accreditation plans and have a renewal price guarantee. Therefore, it is important you research which is best for you. You can purchase accreditation at this point or wait until you have created your course materials and are ready for review.
This will also provide you with an indication of what course materials you will need to submit for review.
Step Two: Create your course materials.
Your accreditation board (we will explain who they are soon don't worry) will request a range of documents from you. This will include proof of your own qualifications but also course materials such as lesson plans and course manuals. You do not have to reinvent the wheel with these and there are many editable materials available online to help you get started. We provide a handbook to all our academies to help them get started. If you do decide to purchase pre-made materials ensure they are from a reputable source and that they align with your accreditors expectations. This may mean that you have to make minor tweaks though we recommend editing any materials to include your own tips and tricks.
Step Three: Purchase Educators Insurace.
Teaching/Tutor/Educator Insurance is a policy add on required by accreditors. This is a extension that protects you against any claims of miseducation from students. Most UK Beauty insurers offer this service and this can often be done on your online insurance portal or over the phone. You will need to send over a copy of your insurance policy to your accreditor.
Step Four: Start the accreditation process.
You are nearly there at this point! Once all your materials are ready and your insurance has been updated its time to purchase the right accreditation plan for you and submit your documents for review. This process takes on average 7-14 working days. In this time your accreditor may ask for additional informations or ask you to make updates. This is because it is their responsibility to ensure that your courses meet industry standards. At this point, if you haven't already you should start to promote your courses.
Step Five: Start Teaching and keep learning.
Once you get the go ahead its time to start teaching Probabe! We recommend started with smaller cohorts of 2-3 students and never exceeding 6 per class. This will allow your students to have your undivided attention. It doesn't stop there. To be an outstanding educator means to be good 99% of the time. This requires you to keep up to date with industry trends, engage in continued professional development and give teaching your all. We recommend you engage in CPD at least once per quarter.
So there you have it! 5 Steps to becoming an Outstanding Educator!
